Always a Mother
A short film about resilience as a woman navigates pregnancy, miscarriage, and other loss.
Our Story
The short film follows the journey of a woman experiencing a pregnancy and miscarriage while overcoming her physical and emotional pain from this and outside experiences.
Women so bravely muster on with an incredible weight because the topic of miscarriage is still so taboo, which is a result of not sharing the experience. Discussion of miscarriage is met with fear and discomfort rather than empathy and understanding. This story affirms for thirty-three percent of pregnant women that they are not alone and people are beginning to understand their pain. Regardless of a healthy child or a miscarried pregnancy, these women are always a mother.
The film is set in Beth's bathroom as she gets ready for her day. However, it is not an ordinary day because this day she is finding out if she has come out on the other side of her miscarriage. As she showers and symbolically cleans herself of the experience, each calculated move flashes back to a part of her pregnancy as it progresses to a miscarriage along with the layered in loss of her grandmother.
Laura loves her big, loud family. They always show up for each other regardless of family rifts created from trivial spats. But, the most alone she ever felt was when she was going through her miscarriage. A lot of why Laura kept it to herself was because everyone was already grieving as her grandmother, the matriarch (aka Bubby) fell ill and passed within 2 months. Those two months happened to coincide with Laura's positive pregnancy tests and miscarriage.
The family supported each other the best they could with the loss of Bubby, but Laura didn't think anyone could take on more or know how to support her with my miscarriage. She grieved that in silence.
Laura has always been a writer at heart and the hiatus her creative passion took over the last 14 years ended when she needed an outlet for her pain that she could not ease from her miscarriage. Laura's cousin, Eli, encouraged her to finish writing her story so he could help her tell it. Once they started down this road, Eli introduced Laura to Robin whom he had worked with on other projects previously. Robin and Laura met and Robin shared how moving she felt the script was. She shared that this would be a cleansing therapy for her as well from when she had just recently miscarried twins.
Laura wants this film to help women who have miscarried to heal. It should help you feel seen and heard. It should help you know you are not alone and there are plenty of people who want to be there for you to talk about it.
She also wants this film to resonate with those woman - and men - who have not experienced a miscarriage. Laura is so happy for those, truly, who have not had this particular pain in their life. This film will give insight needed to allow anyone to be the support these mothers need.
When everyone is aware and informed each mother can feel supported and know that the burden can be unloaded and not carried alone. Ultimately, sharing the pain can lead us all toward happiness.
The goal is to create this film we can all be proud of and submit it to every film festival possible, honestly, to reach as many people as we can - to support as many women as we can. There needs to be more conversation around miscarriage because some people feel uncomfortable by just the word.
Crowdfunding, a social media presence, and the film submission alone means the topic of miscarriage becomes a little more commonplace.
The goal is Sundance Film Festival 2025. Depending on funding and thereafter shooting and editing, which we hope to conclude by June, we will submit the film to whatever festivals we can on the road to Sundance.
What ever monetary amount you can provide is greatly appreciated. Our budget includes paying for production costs, equipment, and a very talented and experienced Cast & Crew. We acknowledge that the amount we are seeking is a higher independent film budget, but the time the Cast & Crew is contributing is substantial and they are professionals at their craft.
If you can help us meet and, hopefully, exceed our goal, we can pay our Cast & Crew properly.
